Article 50: AI transparency notices explained

Deploy AI that interacts directly with people? You must tell them they're interacting with AI. Before or at the start of the interaction. Deadline: August 2, 2026.

Who needs a disclosure

  • Customer service chatbots (Intercom AI, HubSpot chat, custom bots)
  • AI assistants on your website or app
  • Automated phone systems using AI voice
  • Emotion recognition or biometric categorisation systems

Internal Copilot use for drafting emails? Not Article 50. Customer-facing AI? Yes.

What the notice needs to say

Plain and clear. Something like: “You are interacting with an AI system” or “This service uses AI.” It must be visible before or at the start of the interaction. Not buried in terms and conditions.

Example: “Hi — just so you know, this chat uses AI to help answer your questions. A human can take over if you'd prefer.”
